You pick your origin and destination once. While you travel, TrainWake matches your position against the rail line, gives you a gentle nudge a few stops out, then sounds the alarm as you approach your stop — even with the screen off and the phone in your pocket.

The two most common causes are missing background permissions and the phone being silenced. Open the in-app Permissions screen first — it checks everything below in one place.

On Android:

• Location must be set to “Allow all the time” and Physical activity must be granted, so tracking keeps running in the background.
• TrainWake must be left out of battery optimisation (allowlisted / “Unrestricted”). Aggressive OEMs — Xiaomi, OnePlus, Samsung and others — need an extra autostart / background allowance; the app detects these and walks you through it.
• The alarm plays over silent and Do Not Disturb, but a system Battery saver can still throttle background work.

On iOS:

• Location must be set to “Always” and Motion & Fitness must be granted.
• The alarm uses a Time-Sensitive notification, which bypasses Focus / Do Not Disturb but not the hardware silent switch. Keep your ringer on, or add a Focus exception for TrainWake.
• Background App Refresh must be enabled, and Low Power Mode can suspend background tracking.

Location matches your position against the rail line and computes distance to your stop. Motion access — Physical activity on Android, Motion & Fitness on iOS — tells the app when you start moving, so GPS can stay off while you’re standing still; that’s what keeps battery use low. You grant each permission through the system prompt; nothing is required before you tap through.

TrainWake is built to be light: while you’re stationary it relies on a low-rate check and the motion sensor, and only switches GPS to continuous tracking once you’re confirmed moving at vehicle speed.

Pro is a one-time purchase — not a subscription. It removes all ads and unlocks multiple saved journeys, spoken alarms, and a harder-to-defeat wake-up. Your data stays on your device either way.

Yes — the free app shows a small banner on the home screen and, at most once a day, a single full-screen ad when you leave Settings. They’re served by Google AdMob; see the privacy policy for exactly what data that involves. TrainWake Pro removes every ad — once Pro is active, no ad is ever requested.

Open the Upgrade to Pro screen and tap Restore purchases, signed in with the same store account you bought it with — your Google account on Android, or your Apple ID on iOS.
